Understanding Stream Entry

A Day-long Online Retreat

Dec 14, 2025
11:00 am - 3:30 pm US Eastern Time

Online, via Zoom

Stream Entry is the first stage of awakening on the Theravada Buddhist map of awakening.  In this daylong we will explore not only what makes up a Stream Entry experience but also engage practices and meditations that ripen our spiritual practice towards a Stream Entry experience.

Demystifying Awakening: A Buddhist Path of Realization, Embodiment, and Freedom by Stephen Snyder

Stream entry is the first time consciousness has entered and been absorbed into Cessation. Interestingly, the arising of Cessation is not an ending, a removal, a splitting of any identity. Cessation is merging so deeply with pure love and pure presence that all we take ourselves to be—every form and concept of self-identity—is lovingly engulfed in and extinguished by Cessation.

Fully merging in Cessation is an Awakening into the source of all reality, Absolute reality. Part of the impact of this Awakening is a knowing that this is our true identity, the essence of who we really are. As such, the conceptual belief in this separate and distinct personality is shattered. The pieces of self-identity will arise again at this stage of Awakening. Despite self-identity arising again, we no longer believe in a separate existence, a separate self. We know our essential core is none other than the pure love and pure presence of the Absolute realm and the experience of Cessation.

— Stephen Mugen Snyder, Roshi, Demystifying Awakening
