Zen, Kenshō, and Koans

In this daylong we will explore the history, function and benefits of koans as spiritual practice, explore the relationship between koans and kenshō (awakening) looking at these topics with an overall exploration of the Zen tradition specifically as it relates and supports kenshō.

The format of the daylong includes:

  • talks on Zen traditions, instruction on supportive meditations and practices
  • group discussion on the practices and experiences
  • and ample opportunity for questions or comments with Stephen

Stephen Doetsu Snyder is a retired attorney and a senior meditation teacher in the Buddhist Theravada and Zen traditions.  He is the author of five books, including Demystifying Awakening, Buddha’s Heart, and Practicing the Jhanas. He works with students worldwide as well as leading online and in-person retreat in the U.S., the U.K., and Europe.
